For patients with a life-limiting illness or condition, hospice care is more than just an option. However, there are many misconceptions and myths about hospice regarding what it is and who it helps. The reason is, most people don’t fully understand that hospice care offers many important benefits for patients and their families.

At Saint Catherine Hospice Inc., we want to help people learn the truth about hospice and help dispel the stigma that surrounds this critical service. We have debunked three of the most widely believed myths about hospice care.

Myth 1: Hospice care is expensive
Not true! Hospice is a fully funded Medicare or Medicaid benefit, unlimited in length. Once a patient chooses hospice care, almost all bills related to the care of the patient’s illness diagnosis are covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

Myth 2: Hospice care is only for people with cancer or those who are bedridden or very ill
Many patients who are on hospice care are admitted long before their symptoms become unmanageable.

Hospice care is for anyone with a life-limiting illness and six months or less prognosis. Patients with dementia, heart disease, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and more can all benefit from hospice care.

Myth 3: Hospice patients cannot live longer than six months
In fact, it can add life back to your days. Many hospice patients outlive their projected life expectancy and continue receiving hospice care for as long as they are required.
